Floaters

What are Floaters?

Floaters are spots that one perceives in their vision. You may see spots, cobwebs, or black or gray threads floating in the field of vision when you move your eyes, and they disappear when you try to look directly at them.

Floaters

Usually, floaters appear with age as the gel-like substance (vitreous) inside the eyes becomes more liquid. Microscopic fibers in the vitreous tend to clump together and can cast small shadows on the retina. These shadows are called "floaters."

When to see an ophthalmologist

  • When you see more floaters in the eyes than usual
  • A sudden appearance of new floaters
  • Flashes of light in the same eye where you have floaters
  • Darkness on any side or sides of the vision (loss of peripheral vision)

These painless symptoms could occur due to a torn retina, with or without retinal detachment—a vision-threatening disorder that requires immediate attention.

Key Points Summary
  • Diagnosis and Monitoring: Detailed eye examinations to assess the presence and impact of floaters.
  • When Treatment is Necessary: Most floaters are harmless, but treatment is available if they impair vision significantly.
  • Non-Invasive Options: Laser treatments or surgical removal can be considered in severe cases.
  • Informative Guidance: Patients receive detailed information on what to expect and when to seek further help.
