What is Refractive Lens Exchange?

The most innovative type of multifocal lenses in today's market are TRIFOCAL lenses. Trifocal lenses allow near vision (reading and handheld devices such as a phone), distance vision (more than a yard in distance), and intermediate vision (computer).

revolutionary technology

The TRIFOCAL intraocular lens is a revolutionary technology in intraocular lens (IOL) design which enables a patient to improve vision in all distances thus eliminating or reducing significantly the need for eyeglasses after surgery. Until recently, cataracts patients who underwent surgery, required near reading bifocal glasses. At Tijuana Eye Center, we now offer all our patients with cataracts or those with significant visual impairment over the age of 50 the possibility to improve their vision with this new technology.

How does it work?

During our daily activities (reading, watching television, computer work, driving) our focus constantly changes at different distances. The ability of the crystalline lens to focus at different distances is called accommodation. As we get older, the crystalline lens progressively loses accommodation, and near vision worsens. This begins to occur at age 40 in the majority of people. The multifocal intraocular lens was designed to improve both near and far vision. This is achieved through a process called apodization (gradual reduction in diffractive steps of the optic lens surface) thereby enabling focusing at different distances.

Is cataract surgery or clear lens exchange the only option?

Today, we use the Catalase technique for cataract or lens removal. Using the most advanced technology and the unmatched experience of our ophthalmic surgeons, we perform cataract surgery in the most precise, safe and reliable way available in few ophthalmology centers in the world.

Catalase consists of making perfect laser incisions with the precise architecture with the proper angulation, minimal tissue trauma, self-sealing, and ultimately reducing the risk of intra-operative infection. Our femto-second laser then proceeds to perform a capsulorhexis (5 mm opening on the lens bag where the cataract is) to proceed with the fragmentation of the lens into multiple pieces to be aspirated through a probe. With Catalase this process becomes much safer since the risk of capsular rupture is significantly reduced, the centering of the intraocular lens is improved, achieving better visual results for our patients.

Surgery is generally indicated when the patient is not happy with the best corrected visual acuity obtained with eyeglasses or with the constant need for eyeglasses. As such, it is necessary that our ophthalmologists discuss with you all the different options available before deciding on the treatment options available.
