CrossLinking

What is CrossLinking?

This method works by increasing collagen cross-linking, which are the natural "anchors" within the cornea. These anchors are responsible for preventing the cornea from bulging out and becoming steep and irregular (which is the cause of keratoconus).

Clear vision in just 5 Minutes

Tijuana Eye Center has performed this treatment with complete success over the past 7 years among patients with keratoconus avoiding the need for other types of keratoconus surgeries. We have recently acquired the Schwind CXl 365 Vario System which allows us to perform treatments in 5 minutes compared to other treatment systems which last 60 minutes

Eye physicians in Germany and Italy performed the initial studies of collagen crosslinking to strengthen the cornea. They reported results of treatments done as long ago as 1998, so there is a good track record for this procedure. It is important to note in these studies that the proper dosages of the components are a very important part of the treatment. When used properly, there were no negative effects. Unfortunately, U.S. Studies for FDA approval have been halted due to lack of funds forcing keratoconus patients to look outside the United States for treatment.

Corneal cross-linking treatments can also be combined with Kera-RingsÂŽ to flatten the keratoconus cone even more than with Kera-Rings alone. In these cases, cross linking treatments stabilize keratoconus from getting worse as well as help the Kera-RingsÂŽ reverse the keratoconus steepening that had already occurred up to the time of the treatment. During the 30-minute, in-office treatment, custom-made riboflavin eyedrops are applied to the cornea, which are then activated by a special light. This is the process that has been shown in laboratory and clinical studies to increase the amount of collagen cross-linking in the cornea and strengthen the cornea. In published studies, such treatments were proven safe and effective in patients.

Frequent Questions

  • What experience do we have in Keratoconus and Intraocorneal Ring surgery?

Clínica de Ojos de Tijuana was first ophthalmology center in Mexico and one of the first Worldwide to use intracorneal ring 10 years ago for keratoconus treatment.

Today, we are a referral center for keratoconus patients in Mexico and the southwest United States for the treatment of this disease.

We have performed this surgery in thousands of keratoconus patients with very good results.

  • What are the objectives with intracorneal ring surgery?

The main goal of intracorneal ring surgery is stop or slow progression of keratoconus, delaying or avoiding the need for corneal transplant surgery. A secondary goal of surgery is to improve vision. Patients will notice a decrease in prescription size and an improvement in visual acuity.

The advantage of corneal ring surgery is that it allows a fast visual recovery without a prolonged recovery time as is needed with a corneal transplant. Rehabilitation time usually takes approximately 3 months.

Nonetheless this surgery does not preclude the possibility of a future transplant surgery. If the intrastromal rings are not tolerated, they can be removed and the cornea will return to its original shape.

  • What risks or complications are associated during or after surgery?

The risk of complications associated with this type of surgery is minimal. Intolerance to the intrastromal ring has been observed in less than 1% of patients. The risk of infection is reported in the medical literature to be 0.0001%.

When is CrossLinking Performed?

Corneal CrossLinking is indicated in any type of corneal ectasia (keratoconus or post lasik ectasia) however is recommended in stage 1 or 2 keratoconus when the patients prescription is small and contact lens wear is not a problem. For more severe cases, corneal rings are indicated. If scar tissue is present on the cornea, corneal transplant is indicated.

We have been performing corneal crosslinking at Clinica de Ojos de Tijuna over the last 5 years with success avoiding the need for more invasive surgery. The Schwind CXL 365 Vario System recently acquired at Clinica de Ojos de Tijuana allows cross linking treatment in just 5 minutes as compared to older technologies which last 60 minutes.

Will I be asleep during the procedure?

The procedure is performed in 15 to 30 minutes. There is no need to perform the surgery under general anesthesia.

is surgery painful?

Thanks to modern topical anesthetics and the use of sedatives, the procedure is completely painless.
