Optical Coherence Tomography

What is Optical Coherence
Tomography?

It's important to remember that all examinations are as useful as the professional technicians who accurately performs the examinations and the specialists who interpret the results.

Optic Coherence Tomography

This non-invasive, no-contact procedure is used in ophthalmology to obtain detailed images from within the retina, detecting microscopic changes not visible during clinical examination. It captures photographic images using ultrasound of the optic nerve and macula.

Optic Nerve

Using optic coherence tomography (OCT)) with glaucoma patients permits better control and follow-up on disease progression. OCT is capable of measuring the optic nerve fibers and cup/disk relation, structures that are altered early in glaucoma. Monitoring these changes can detect glaucoma before visual loss is noted in computerized perimetry.

Through the use of a sophisticated computer analysis of the optic nerve, structures are correlated to a database of normal patients to estimate loss of the nerve fiber layer.

It is important to perform this exam every six months to one year to observe these morphological changes as they can occur slowly over time.

Macula

Optic coherence tomography is also used as a routine diagnostic exam in the management of macular diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, macular degeneration, macular hole, central serous choroidopathy, and optic disc pits,

The duration of the exam is 10 minutes and may require dilation.

Diagnostic Eye Tests

It is important to allow enough time in your schedule for a thorough eye examination. Typically, these can take 1 to 2 hours but may be longer if you require special testing. In all cases, please refer to our Clinic Guidelines

Key Points Summary
  • High-Resolution Imaging: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides detailed, cross-sectional images of the retina, aiding in the diagnosis and management of eye conditions.
  • Early Disease Detection: OCT is crucial for detecting early signs of retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.
  • Non-Invasive and Quick: The procedure is non-invasive, painless, and typically takes only a few minutes to complete.
  • Detailed Analysis: It allows for precise measurement of retinal thickness and identification of structural abnormalities.
  • Monitoring Treatment Efficacy: OCT is an essential tool for monitoring the effectiveness of treatments and progression of retinal conditions over time.
  • Enhanced Eye Care: This advanced diagnostic tool supports comprehensive eye care, ensuring better outcomes for patients with retinal and optic nerve disorders.
